Compression Is Much Faster Now With WinRAR! Download WinRAR 4.20
WinRAR 4.20 final version was released June 14th, with significatly improved speed compared to previous versions! This is another step ahead for the most complete archiving software on the market.
"As the market leader our ultimate priority is to continue to set the standard for compression software and, in every new version, to ensure that the needs of our growing global user base are met or exceeded. The primary focus in the development of WinRAR 4.20 has been to optimize for better utilization of multi-core processors. As a result we have achieved a substantially higher compression rate and further increased efficiency. Just another step in the right direction,” says Burak Canboy, win.rar GmbH’s CEO.
WinRAR 4.20 final version release highlights are:
- Changes in RAR compression: a) The RAR compression algorithm has now been optimized for better utilization with multiple processor cores. While some speed gain is possible with a single processor PC, best results are achieved in a multi-core environment.
- Speed gain does depend on the data type and average file size. Multiple cores are now utilized more efficiently when compressing large files.
b) "Fastest" (-m1) compression mode also now supports multiple processor cores. In 4.11 it could use a only single processor core.
c) The RAR general decompression algorithm speed has now been slightly improved, though not to the same extent as with RAR compression. This is due to it is not being able to use multiple cores, so its performance does not depend on the number of available cores.
- Changes in ZIP compression: a) RAR's ZIP compression has been rewritten to support several processor cores, resulting in noticeably higher performance in multi-core environments. Single CPU ZIP compression is also faster than in 4.11;

Speed Improvements for RAR Compression
Quad core CPUs are becoming mainstream and affordable as users pay more attention to multicore efficiency. The Primary target of WinRAR 4.20 has been to utilise this efficiency.
By utilising the increased amount of RAM and CPU improvements, the RAR compression speed in single core mode CPU's has been raised considerably even though the main optimization has been made for multicore mode. For the typical average data mix, the speed of RAR compression is now twice as fast as WinRAR 4.11, while poorly compressing data such as .jpg and .mp3 is now three times faster. The speed difference between this new version and previous versions increases with the larger number of cores.
Speed improvements for ZIP Compression
Our ZIP Code has been rewritten and is now using similar techniques to the RAR compression, making WinRAR 4.2 ZIP compression faster than WinRAR 4.11, even in single core mode, by about 70%. By utilizing the multicore support in 4.20 ZIP, it can be up to 3 times faster than 4.11.
Additional improvements with WinRAR 4.20
The RAR format continues to have many advantages like archiving, conversion, security and recovery functions. Recovery functions now also access multiple core processors in order to achieve time-savings when repairing files.
